New York City is huge and has different boroughs with their own reputations. You might be thinking about moving to NYC or you may be going for a visit and want to know about the different boroughs. Where do you start though? Let's start with a brief overview of each of the five boroughs.

NYC Boroughs

THE BRONX What do home-run heroes, hip-hop history and hand-pulled mozzarella have in common? You can find them all in the Bronx—that is, when you’re not wandering hundreds of acres of parkland, touring historic homes or strolling along New York City’s answer to the Champs-Élysées.

BROOKLYN

Hipsters and history buffs agree: Brooklyn is everyone’s style. The most populous borough has no one defining draw—people come for live music, eclectic eats, pro sports, immigrant history and world-class culture. Of course, you’ll cross paths with all kinds on the majestic span of the Brooklyn Bridge.

MANHATTAN

Manhattan truly feels like the heart of it all. Broadway and Times Square sit at its electric center, but famous landmarks and household-name attractions can be found all over the island. Beyond the iconic are countless neighborhoods promising great rewards to those who explore.

QUEENS

Queens is one of the most diverse places in the world. Many get their fill from the food scene alone, which ranges from exquisite Greek souvlaki to the best hot pot outside of Sichuan. The borough is also a major destination for sports fans, nature lovers and modern-art aficionados.

STATEN ISLAND

Easily accessible by a scenic ride on the Staten Island Ferry, the greenest borough feels like a getaway within the City. Beyond a charming North Shore rich with maritime history, Staten Island is best known for its beaches, vast parkland and even a fully preserved colonial village.

What else should you know

This is all great info to know when looking into NYC but you may also want to know how safe are each of these places? Knowing the actual facts about borough crime might not actually be as hard as it may seem. NYC Open Data has actual crime data for the city. This dataset includes all valid felony, misdemeanor, and violation crimes reported to the New York City Police Department.

Using data from the first quarter of 2018, I created this dashboard with Tableau Public.

What Do We Learn

As you can see from the data more crimes happen in Brooklyn than any other borough and Staten Island has by far and away the least amount of crime. When exploring this dashboard you can also learn that there are more male on female crimes and more petit larceny crimes than any other.

We also learn that most victims of crimes are with in the age of 25-44. Now this is a complete over view of the city. What if I want to know the facts about a specific borough? That is something you can do with this dashboard using filters.

Crime by borough

Using a filter we are able to see the actual facts about each borough. For me a picture is worth a thousand words so below are snap shots of the crime in each borough. As you are looking at these you can see the differences between each borough. When you combine this quantitative data with the information above you now have a more complete idea about with borough might fit you best if you were to move to NYC!
